How to rank on Google Maps: a 12-step checklist for Indian businesses
Rohan Tiwarekar · 29 Oct 2026
Google ranks Maps results on three things: relevance (how well your profile matches the search), distance (how close you are to the person searching) and prominence (how well known and well reviewed you are). You can't move your shop, so work on the other two: a complete Google Business Profile, the right category, steady reviews, and a website that matches the profile. That's straight from Google's own help page. The checklist below turns it into steps.
What we found when we checked 30 top-rated clinics
In October 2026 we checked 30 dentists, each with 50 or more Google reviews. 20 of the 30 had a gap that loses enquiries. 10 had no website on their Google listing at all. One listing's website link opened a gambling site. And 19 of the 20 with a gap were rated 4.8 or higher.
The lesson: great reviews alone don't finish the job. People find you on Maps, then tap through to check you out. If there's nothing to tap, or the link is broken, many of them go to the next clinic. (How we ran the check.)
The 12-step checklist
- Claim and verify your profile. Search your business name on Google Maps. If you see "Own this business?", claim it and finish verification.
- Pick the most specific main category. "Dental clinic" beats "Doctor". Add extra categories only if they're true.
- Use your real business name. Don't stuff keywords into the name ("Best Dentist Kharghar"). It's against Google's rules and can get your profile suspended.
- Keep name, address and phone the same everywhere. Your website, JustDial, Instagram and any directory should match your Google profile exactly.
- Fill every field. Hours, holiday hours, services, a plain description, and the areas you serve.
- Link a website that works. Open the link on your phone today. Check it loads fast and has a WhatsApp or call button.
- Add real photos, and keep adding them. Outside (so people recognise you), inside, your team, your work. New photos every month signal an active business.
- Ask every happy customer for a review. Right after a good visit, with a one-tap link on WhatsApp or a QR code at the counter.
- Reply to every review. Thank the good ones. Answer the bad ones calmly and offer to fix it. Future customers read the replies.
- Post updates. Offers, new services, festival hours. Short posts keep the profile fresh.
- List your services with prices where you can. It helps Google match you to searches like "teeth cleaning price near me".
- Answer enquiries fast. Calls and messages from Maps are hot leads. A reply in minutes beats a reply tomorrow.
What doesn't work
- Fake reviews. Google removes them, and can restrict your profile.
- Keyword-stuffed names. See step 3.
- Several profiles for one location. Keep one profile per real address.
Common questions
How long does it take to rank on Google Maps? Fixing the basics can show results within a few weeks. Reviews and photos build up over months.
Does my website affect my Google Maps ranking? Yes. A website that matches your profile and says what you do helps relevance, and it's where people go to decide.
Do I need to pay Google to rank on Maps? No. Ads can show you above the results, but the normal Maps ranking is free.
